Trump Wants a Temporary Carburant Tax Pause as Pump Prices Rise
Donald Trump said Monday he wants a temporary carburant tax pause on gasoline and diesel as average pump prices climbed above 4.5 dollars per gallon. The proposal is aimed at easing the burden on drivers, but any cut would run through Congress before it could reach the pump.
18 Cents on Gasoline
The White House said the move would trim a little more than 18 cents per gallon on gasoline and 24 cents on diesel, a reduction that would offset only a fraction of the oil-shock-driven increase of about 1.5 to 2 dollars per gallon since February. For motorists paying 4.5 dollars per gallon, the relief is real but limited.
Trump said the tax would be brought back “progressivement” once prices fall again. That detail points to a short-lived suspension rather than a permanent rewrite of federal fuel policy.
Congress and Infrastructure Funds
The federal fuel tax has traditionally helped finance roads, bridges and public transport, so a suspension would cut into money the government uses for infrastructure. Congress would have to vote on the proposal, which means the plan is not automatic even after Trump’s announcement.
The measure would apply to gasoline and diesel alike, and it would benefit all motorists in the same way, regardless of economic vulnerability. A driver with a small car, a family filling a pickup and a commuter buying a few gallons would all receive the same per-gallon break.
War, Strait of Hormuz, and Price Pressure
The proposal lands after the war against Iran and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz pushed fuel prices higher. Trump framed the move as a response to that surge, which has left the average gasoline price above 4.5 dollars per gallon and put pressure on households at the pump.
That leaves a narrow policy choice for Washington: accept a modest, temporary reduction in fuel taxes, or preserve a revenue stream that has long paid for infrastructure. Motorists would feel the cut quickly if Congress approves it, but the federal government would also give up that financing while the suspension lasts.
