Gautam Adani Faces Possible U.S. Charge Dismissal

gautam adani may soon see criminal charges dropped, after reports that the Justice Department is moving forward with plans to dismiss the indictment against the Indian billionaire and chairman of the Adani Group. The move could come as soon as this week and would end a case filed in November 2024 over a $250 million bribery scheme.

Justice Department Move

said the department is “moving forward” with plans to drop the indictment. The case accused Adani and other executives of bribing Indian government officials to win solar energy supply contracts and of hiding the alleged scheme from U.S. and international investors while securing funding for those contracts.

Adani and his co-executives denied the allegations and moved to dismiss the Securities and Exchange Commission’s separate civil case. That case, like the criminal indictment, centers on claims that Adani bribed Indian government officials in exchange for solar contracts.

April Meeting Offer

reported that Adani hired Robert J. Giuffra, one of President Donald Trump’s personal attorneys, and that his lawyers made a pitch in April. They offered to invest $10 billion in the U.S. economy and create 15,000 jobs if the charges were dropped.

According to, DOJ officials gave that proposal a “favorable response.” Prosecutors said the offer would “play no role in the resolution of the case.”

SEC Case Still Open

The potential dismissal would not only touch the criminal case. The Securities and Exchange Commission may similarly settle its separate civil case against Adani, which could leave the regulatory side of the dispute to be resolved after the criminal indictment disappears.

For Adani, whose net worth Forbes valued at $82 billion on Thursday afternoon, up $3.5 billion from Wednesday, the immediate question is whether the department files the dismissal this week and whether the SEC follows with a separate settlement.
