Google Maps immersive map update is starting to land on Android Auto as Immersive Navigation. The change turns the map into a 3D view with buildings, bridges, and translucent structures. For drivers, that means more visual context at a glance rather than a new navigation mode.
Google Maps 3D view
Immersive Navigation uses Street View and satellite imagery data to turn the map view 3D. Buildings appear as actual 3D structures on the Maps screen with heights relative to real life, and bridges can be seen as you pass underneath them.
Google Maps also makes buildings translucent whenever they may obscure the view. That keeps the screen from becoming cluttered when the route runs through dense streets.
Android Auto 17.3 rollout
The feature does not seem to be tied to any specific version of Android Auto. Android Auto 17.3 is landing around the time Immersive Navigation is starting to appear, but updating to 17.3 is not likely to hurt the chances of getting the feature.
Android Auto 17.2 introduced a bunch of bugs and crashes. That makes the arrival of 17.3 more relevant for users who were already waiting for a cleaner build before this visual change showed up.
Server-side Google change
The feature may be a server-side change that Google made. If that is how it is being delivered, users probably cannot force the rollout just by installing an APK.
The latest version of Android Auto can be downloaded ahead of time from APKMirror and installed with APKMirror's app. That may help users who want to be ready, but it does not guarantee Immersive Navigation will appear immediately.
Google has not said when the rollout will reach everyone. Which Android Auto users have received Immersive Navigation so far is still the practical question for anyone checking the Maps screen after each update.
