Shein Removes Child-like Sex Dolls After French Watchdog Complaint
Chinese online fashion retailer Shein has decided to withdraw childlike sex dolls from its website following a complaint from French authorities. The action was announced on November 2, after the French Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) identified these dolls during an inspection.
Complaint from French Authorities
The DGCCRF found various pornographic items, including the controversial childlike sex dolls, listed on Shein’s platform. In a statement, the agency emphasized that the description and classification of these items clearly indicated their inappropriate nature as potential child pornography.
Lack of Protective Measures
- The DGCCRF noted inadequate filtering processes on Shein’s website.
- Minors and sensitive audiences could easily access this inappropriate content.
Upon being notified, Shein promptly removed the products in question. The company expressed its commitment to maintaining strict compliance with its internal policies and applicable laws, citing a zero-tolerance stance on inappropriate content.
Shein’s Business Expansion in France
Despite the controversy, Shein continues to expand its presence in France. The company is set to launch its first physical store at the Bazar de l’Hôtel de Ville (BVH) in Paris. This opening is scheduled for Wednesday, marking a significant step in Shein’s efforts to establish a brick-and-mortar presence in the country.
Plans for Additional Stores
In addition to the Paris location, Shein intends to open five more stores within Galeries Lafayette department stores in the following cities:
- Angers
- Dijon
- Grenoble
- Limoges
- Reims
The brand has faced criticism from traditional French retailers, which accuse Shein of disrupting the market with its low-price offerings. As the company navigates these challenges, its recent actions regarding inappropriate content highlight ongoing discussions about regulations in the fashion industry.
