Ford’s Electric F-150 Lightning Pickup Faces Uncertain Future

Ford’s F-150 Lightning, the leading electric pickup in the U.S., faces an uncertain fate. Speculation is mounting about the possibility of the company discontinuing this pivotal electric vehicle.

Production Paused Due to Supply Chain Issues

Earlier this year, Ford suspended production of the F-150 Lightning at its Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan. This halt followed a fire at Novelis’ plant in New York, which disrupted the aluminum supply essential for manufacturing.

During its third-quarter earnings report, Ford confirmed that the production pause would continue. The company is prioritizing gas and hybrid truck models, which yield higher profits and require less aluminum.

Financial Struggles in the Electric Vehicle Sector

Reports from the Wall Street Journal indicate that Ford is contemplating the elimination of the F-150 Lightning. This potential decision arises amid significant financial losses in Ford’s electric vehicle division, Model e. In Q3 alone, the EV unit incurred a loss of $1.4 billion. Over the first nine months of 2025, losses have totaled $3.6 billion.

  • Approximately $3 billion of these losses stem from current electric models like the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E.
  • The remaining $600 million relates to investments in future electric models.

Future Focus on Affordable Electric Vehicles

Ford is shifting its strategy towards developing smaller, more affordable electric vehicles using the Universal EV platform. This new platform is aimed at facilitating the production of cost-effective EVs, starting at around $30,000.

CEO Jim Farley highlighted that affordable electric options are “not a distant plan,” suggesting they are imminent. The first vehicle to utilize this platform is anticipated to be a midsize electric pickup, comparable in size to the Ford Maverick or Ranger, expected to debut in 2027.

Current Sales Performance of the F-150 Lightning

Despite the uncertainties, the F-150 Lightning remains the top-selling electric pickup in America. In Q3, Ford recorded sales exceeding 10,000 units. As of October, total sales reached 24,577, slightly lower than the 24,670 sold during the same timeframe in 2024.

The future of Ford’s F-150 Lightning electric pickup hangs in the balance as the company reevaluates its strategy in the evolving automotive market.
