Waymo Robotaxis Now Operate on Freeways in LA, San Francisco, and Phoenix

Waymo has made a significant advancement in its autonomous vehicle program by introducing robotaxi services that now operate on freeways in three major cities: San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. This marks a pivotal expansion for the company, initially formed from Google’s self-driving project.

Expansion of Waymo Robotaxi Services

Waymo began testing its self-driving vehicles on the freeway linking Silicon Valley to San Francisco sixteen years ago. Over the years, the service evolved, launching commercial robotaxi services in several cities including Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. However, freeway services remained unavailable until recently.

Freeway Driving Benefits

According to Waymo, the new freeway operations could cut ride times by up to 50%. This improvement is anticipated to attract users who need to commute between various towns and suburbs in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, as well as those traveling through the expansive metro areas of Los Angeles and Phoenix.

Service to San Jose

  • The robotaxi routes will now include San Jose, creating a unified service area of 260 miles across the Peninsula.
  • Waymo will also begin curbside pick-up and drop-off services at San Jose Mineta International Airport.
  • The company already provides similar services at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport.

User Preferences and App Integration

Initially, not all Waymo riders will have access to the freeway service. Users interested in freeway rides can indicate this preference through the Waymo app. When requesting a ride, they may be matched with an autonomous vehicle operating on the freeway.

Safety and Reliability of Freeway Driving

Waymo’s co-CEO, Dmitri Dolgov, emphasized the complexities of mastering freeway driving without human backup drivers. He noted the importance of a strong focus on system safety and reliability. The company has conducted extensive testing, combining public road driving with closed course and simulation assessments to ensure seamless transitions between freeways and surface streets.

Coordination with Safety Officials

To enhance safety protocols now that robotaxis are on freeways, Waymo has expanded its operational strategies. This includes better coordination with safety officials, such as the California Highway Patrol.

As Waymo continues to innovate and expand its services, the introduction of freeway operations marks a crucial step in making autonomous transportation a viable option for everyday commuters in major metropolitan areas.
