Inside Look: Pittsburgh’s New Airport Terminal Unveils Tuesday
On Tuesday morning, Pittsburgh International Airport will officially unveil its new terminal, marking a significant moment in the city’s aviation history. This $1.7 billion development has been highly anticipated, with the transition from the existing airside terminal set to begin on Monday evening.
Pittsburgh’s New Airport Terminal Transition
The transition process will start around 7:30 p.m. on Monday, when the last international flight arrives in Pittsburgh. Crews will then commence the switchover, expected to take several hours. By 9:30 p.m., the final baggage will circulate on the current outbound baggage belts, and passengers will pass through the existing security checkpoint one last time.
Early Tuesday morning, significant changes will take effect. The tram service between the landside and airside terminals will cease operations, and new public roadways will open for access to the freshly designed terminal.
First Flights and Passenger Experience
The inaugural flight from the new terminal will be a Southwest Airlines departure to Denver at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday. This event will allow travelers to experience the redesign and enhanced features of the terminal firsthand.
The entrance to the new terminal will create a striking first impression. As passengers enter, they will find themselves in a spacious area adorned with ambient lighting. Immediate access to ticketing counters for all airlines will be available on both sides of the entrance.
Enhanced Security and Efficiency
- The new security screening area includes 12 lanes, an increase from the seven available at the old terminal.
- Innovative security equipment has been installed to streamline the passenger experience, reducing the need for activities such as shoe removal.
Once through security, travelers will no longer have to board a tram. Instead, they will proceed directly to the bridge tunnel leading to their gates.
Improved Arrival and Baggage Claim
Arriving passengers will access the terminal through the airside concourses, which feature new indoor landscaping. The baggage claim area has also been significantly upgraded, with larger and better-marked carousels. Notably, luggage will now travel three fewer miles to reach its claim point.
This state-of-the-art baggage handling system is designed to enhance efficiency and minimize wait times, creating a more user-friendly experience overall.
With the new configuration and the elimination of the tram, the goal is to streamline the entire travel process, providing a more pleasant experience for all passengers at Pittsburgh International Airport.
