Campbell’s CISO Terminated Over Controversial ‘Poor People’ Remarks

Campbell Soup Company is currently investigating its Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and Vice President, Martin Bally, following serious allegations of inappropriate comments. Bally was placed on temporary leave as the company probes these claims. The controversy stems from a secret recording made by a former employee during a September 2024 meeting.

Controversial Remarks Surface

In the recording, Bally allegedly expressed derogatory opinions about Campbell’s products, referring to them as “highly processed” and using unprofessional language to describe the company’s offerings. Reportedly described as an “hour-long tirade,” the comments include disparaging remarks about the company’s customers and its workforce, particularly targeting Indian employees.

Details of the Lawsuit

Former remote security analyst Robert Garza filed a lawsuit against Campbell’s after his dismissal from the company. He claims he recorded Bally’s comments after feeling something was amiss during a meeting concerning his salary. In January 2025, Garza took the recording to his supervisor, J.D. Aupperle. He was subsequently let go from his position 20 days later.

Specific Allegations

  • Bally reportedly admitted to using cannabis edibles while at work.
  • He allegedly made xenophobic comments about Indian employees, claiming they could not think independently.
  • He is quoted as saying, “We have shit for fucking poor people. Who buys our shit?”
  • Additionally, he expressed distaste for the ingredients in Campbell’s products, particularly criticizing the notion of bioengineered meats.

The company has denied using 3D-printed meat, although it acknowledges the presence of genetically modified organisms in some of its plant-based products. Garza’s lawsuit asserts that he had a clean record prior to his termination.

Campbell’s Response

A statement from Campbell’s clarified that the remarks attributed to Bally are not indicative of the company’s values or culture. The company emphasized the quality of its ingredients and the integrity of its production process. They stated, “If the recording is legitimate, the comments are unacceptable. They do not reflect our values and the culture of our company.”

As the investigation continues, Campbell’s aims to address the allegations seriously and uphold its commitment to its employees and customers. The situation remains a pressing concern for the company as it seeks to move forward amidst the controversy.
