OpenAI Launches GPT-5.2 in Latest Agentic AI Advancement

OpenAI has officially released GPT-5.2, aiming to enhance economic value for users. This new model builds on its predecessor, GPT-5.1, which came out less than a month ago. The company emphasizes GPT-5.2 as its “best model yet for everyday professional use.”

Key Features of GPT-5.2

Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, highlighted several significant improvements. The GPT-5.2 model series includes Instant, Thinking, and Pro versions. It excels in:

  • Creating spreadsheets
  • Building presentations
  • Writing code
  • Perceiving images
  • Understanding long contexts
  • Using tools effectively
  • Handling complex, multi-step projects

Aidan Clark, VP of research at OpenAI, reported positive results from a senior immunology researcher who used GPT-5.2 Pro. The model generated critical questions and provided stronger explanations regarding the immune system than previous models.

Agentic AI Enhancements

GPT-5.2 is designed to improve workflows for AI agents. Max Schwarzer, a researcher at OpenAI, described the goal of making ChatGPT the ultimate personalized assistant. The latest Thinking model is noted for having fewer inaccuracies compared to its predecessor. This reduces the risk of delivering unreliable information, making it a crucial tool for professionals.

Partnerships and Future Plans

Several companies, including Notion, Box, and Shopify, were selected as pre-release testers for GPT-5.2. OpenAI continues to confront competition, especially with Google gaining traction in the AI market. In response, OpenAI plans to introduce two additional models next year, including one codenamed “Garlic.”

Furthermore, OpenAI has secured a three-year licensing agreement with Disney. This deal allows the creation of user-generated social videos featuring characters from Disney’s vast universe, including Marvel and Pixar. Disney will also invest $1 billion in OpenAI, making it a major customer.

Rolling Out the New Model

The GPT-5.2 models will gradually roll out starting today, initially available to subscribers of OpenAI’s paid plans. Users can find GPT-5.1 in the “legacy models” dropdown menu for three months before it is officially deprecated.

OpenAI aims to create a seamless experience for users with this transition. Meanwhile, there are ongoing efforts to develop an age-prediction model that can enhance safeguarding features for minors, with plans for an “adult mode” anticipated to launch in early 2026.
