Caller Cons Woman into Depositing $36K via Bitcoin ATM: BCSO Reports

In a recent case highlighted by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), a woman fell victim to a scam involving a fraudulent caller impersonating an attorney. This alarming incident serves as a warning to the public regarding the risks of phone scams.

Overview of the Scam

Last Friday, deputies were alerted to an incident in Bexar County’s northeastern region. A woman reported receiving a call from a man claiming to be an attorney associated with a pretrial incarceration program.

Details of the Deceptive Call

  • The caller informed the victim that her son had been involved in a serious car accident.
  • He falsely stated that her son had been arrested for driving under the influence.
  • Additional claims included that the other driver was pregnant and a retired federal employee.
  • The caller set a remarkable bond of $180,000 for her son’s release.

Financial Demands

The victim, believing the deception, complied with the scammer’s request. She initially deposited $18,000 into a Bitcoin ATM located on Walzem Road. Following this, the caller reached out again, falsely claiming that the pregnant driver had miscarried.

This led to another demand for $18,000, which the victim also deposited. Eventually, the scammer asked for an additional $20,000 to dismiss the case.

Resolution and Victim’s Discovery

Fortunately, the situation began to unravel when the victim attempted to withdraw funds from her bank. A teller recognized the unfolding scam and advised the woman to confirm the information directly with her son.

Upon verification, the victim discovered that her son had not been in any accident and was safe at home.
