Samsung SmartThings First to Support Matter Cameras Globally

Samsung Electronics has officially announced that its SmartThings platform is now the first in the industry to support Matter 1.5, a global smart home standard. This significant update allows SmartThings to integrate Matter-compatible cameras, expanding its ecosystem. Starting later this month, SmartThings will enhance its compatibility, adding cameras to its array of supported devices, which already includes lights, door locks, switches, and various sensors.

Enhancing Security and Safety with Matter 1.5

The Matter 1.5 standard was introduced by the Connectivity Standard Alliance (CSA) in November. It adds crucial camera support along with enhanced closure operations for blinds, awnings, and garage doors while improving energy management. Cameras are vital for any smart home and Matter 1.5 supports an extensive range of use cases, such as:

  • Indoor security cameras
  • Outdoor security cameras
  • Video doorbells

This update features live video streaming, two-way communication, motion detection, event history, and pan-tilt-zoom controls. Such enhancements ensure that Matter cameras are an integral part of smart home ecosystems.

Expanded User Choices and Developer Benefits

With SmartThings backing the Matter standard, camera manufacturers can now develop Matter-based cameras that integrate seamlessly into the platform. This eliminates the need for separate API customizations. Samsung is collaborating with notable global IoT device makers, including:

  • Aqara
  • Eve
  • Ulticam

These matter cameras are projected to launch in March 2026. SmartThings has already established partnerships with brands like Aqara, Arlo, Hue, and Ring, offering diverse smart home camera experiences across various protocols and connection methods.

Building a Safer Smart Home

The integration of Matter cameras into SmartThings empowers users to craft a safe and convenient smart home tailored to their lifestyles. This system allows users to monitor their homes while away, check on pets, and set personalized routines in conjunction with smart doorbells.

Strengthening Industry Leadership

Samsung SmartThings continues to assert its leadership as a leading smart home solution, expanding global partnerships under an open-platform strategy. Through the WWST (Works With SmartThings) certification program, SmartThings supports over 4,700 models from more than 390 partner brands. By adopting the Matter standard swiftly, Samsung has introduced 58 Matter device types into consumers’ daily lives, solidifying its position in the smart home market.
