TJ Maxx Shutters Iconic Newbury Street Store in Boston
TJ Maxx has recently closed its store located on iconic Newbury Street in Boston. This decision comes less than a decade after its opening in 2016. The well-known retailer, owned by Framingham-based TJX, announced the closure would take effect by early 2026.
TJ Maxx Newbury Street Store Closure Details
The Newbury Street store was situated in a distinctive building designed by architect Frank Gehry, at 360 Newbury Street and Mass. Ave. Confirmation of the closure was provided by a TJ Maxx employee, stating that the last operational day was Thursday.
Impact on Employees
A recent Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) revealed that 117 employees were expected to lose their jobs by January 5, 2026. However, TJX indicated that all affected workers were offered positions at nearby locations.
- Store opened: 2016
- Last day of operation: Thursday
- Employees affected: 117
- Job opportunities provided: Nearby stores
A TJ Maxx spokesperson commented on the closure, stating, “We are always assessing and reviewing our real estate strategies.” The spokesperson emphasized that Boston has been a key market for TJX for nearly 50 years.
Company Performance and Future Plans
Despite the closure of the Newbury Street location, TJX’s retail operations remain robust. In their latest quarterly earnings report published in November, the company reported an increase in sales and expanded their store count by 57 locations.
Other brands under the TJX umbrella, which includes Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra, and HomeSense, continue to enhance the company’s market presence. CEO Ernie Herrmann praised the company’s value proposition, stating, “We believe this is a testament to our treasure-hunt shopping experience, which continues to draw consumers to our retail banners worldwide.”
Retail Landscape in 2025
In the broader retail landscape, over 8,100 stores closed in 2025 as many retailers faced bankruptcies and economic hardships. Despite these challenges, TJX appears to be navigating the market with strategic adjustments.
