Benaddiction Closes After 13 Years in Fresno
Fresno locals gathered recently to bid farewell to a cherished breakfast venue, Benaddiction, which has been a beloved fixture for 13 years. The emotional goodbye was marked by heartfelt reflections from longtime patrons and owner James Caples.
History of Benaddiction
Benaddiction began as a food truck in Downtown Fresno, operated by Caples in 2013. Over the years, it transformed into a popular restaurant known for its signature dishes, especially eggs Benedict and pancakes. The restaurant even gained recognition by being featured in El-Balad’s Dine and Dish series in 2022.
Community Impact
For many, including loyal customer Madelyn De La Cruz, Benaddiction was more than just a dining spot. “It felt very homegrown Fresno,” she said, highlighting the unique atmosphere that kept her returning. Caples emphasized the importance of community, stating he built strong relationships with regulars who appreciated the restaurant’s warm culture.
Challenges Leading to Closure
Despite its popularity, Benaddiction faced significant challenges in recent years. The unexpected closure of its original location in 2023, combined with rising food prices and a government shutdown, heavily impacted the business. Caples reported a staggering 25% drop in sales by October 2025, resulting in a staggering financial loss of nearly $800,000.
- Bacon prices in Fresno rose from $5.63 per pound in 2016 to $7.29.
- Eggs increased from $2.33 to $3.49 over the same period.
Caples reflected on the struggles, saying, “I stopped paying myself, working mostly for tips.” Ultimately, he reached a point where he felt exhausted and decided it was time to close the restaurant.
Final Days and Farewell Offerings
As the closure approached, Caples wanted to give back to his loyal customers. “Starting next weekend, we’ll be selling our mugs on a bid offer,” he announced. This initiative allows patrons to take home a piece of the cherished establishment.
The final opportunity for customers to enjoy breakfast at Benaddiction will be on Monday, January 19. After 13 years of dedicated service, Caples is ready to move on to a new chapter in his life.
