Wing Expands Drone Delivery to 150 Additional Walmart Locations
Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet, is set to expand its drone delivery services significantly in 2026. The company announced plans to launch delivery at 150 additional Walmart locations. This expansion includes new cities such as Los Angeles, St. Louis, Miami, and Cincinnati.
Expansion Timeline
In June 2025, Wing and Walmart will collaborate to extend their delivery service to 100 more stores located in Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa. Currently, Wing operates drone deliveries at about 27 Walmart locations, primarily in Dallas-Fort Worth and Arkansas.
Growth Objectives
With the upcoming additions, Wing aims to create a network of 270 Walmart locations equipped for drone delivery by 2027. Achieving this ambitious goal would mark a significant escalation in drone delivery operations, which have traditionally been limited in scope.
Benefits of Drone Delivery
Drone delivery presents several environmental benefits. By utilizing small electric multi-rotor aircraft, it reduces the reliance on traditional delivery trucks, thereby lowering emissions associated with last-mile deliveries. This approach is being mirrored by sidewalk robot companies also targeting urban delivery solutions.
Customer Demand
According to Wing, the interest in their delivery service continues to grow. The top 25% of their customers reportedly place orders three times a week. Demand has tripled over the past six months, showcasing a clear appetite for this innovative delivery method.
Drone Specifications
- Payload capacity: Up to 5 pounds (with newer models)
- Maximum range: 12 miles round trip
- Top speed: 65 mph
Wing’s drones utilize tethers and hooks to collect small packages from designated distribution points in Walmart parking lots. Delivery is made directly to customers’ front lawns, enhancing convenience and efficiency.
As Wing progresses in its drone delivery initiatives, its expansion to these 150 additional Walmart locations signifies a pivotal step towards modernizing last-mile logistics and meeting growing consumer demand.
