Delta Expands Widebody Fleet with Boeing 787 Dreamliner

Delta Air Lines has announced the addition of 30 new Boeing 787 Dreamliner widebody aircraft to its fleet. This move is part of the airline’s strategy to streamline operations and enhance fuel efficiency, offering travelers an upgraded in-flight experience.

Transitioning to a New Fleet Type

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner will mark a new fleet type for Delta, complementing a previous order of 100 Boeing 737-10 MAX aircraft set to be delivered upon certification. This expansion emphasizes the strength of the U.S. aerospace sector, as both the aircraft and its General Electric (GE) engines are designed and manufactured in the United States.

Plans for Future Fleet Management

Ed Bastian, Delta’s CEO, stated, “Delta is building the fleet for the future.” This initiative aims to enhance customer experiences, improve operations, and replace older, less efficient aircraft. Delta aims to operate the largest international flight schedule in its history this year.

Benefits of the New Boeing 787 Dreamliner

  • 25% better fuel efficiency per seat compared to previous models
  • Larger premium cabins with enhanced cargo capabilities
  • Quiet cabin with large, tint-controlled windows

Dan Janki, Delta’s CFO, highlighted that this order adds diversity to the airline’s widebody operations while enabling cost-effective scaling across fleets. The 787 is noted for its spacious and quieter cabin, which contributes to an overall premium travel experience.

Advanced Features and Comforts

The 787 Dreamliner will include world-class amenities and offer more premium seating options, such as Delta One Suites, which currently represent 45% of Delta’s widebody seating. Passengers can expect:

  • Over 1,000 hours of free in-flight entertainment
  • Fast, complimentary Delta Sync Wi-Fi
  • Upscale food and beverage services

Engine Innovation and Reliability

Delta has chosen GE Aerospace’s GEnx engines to power the new aircraft. These engines are known for their innovative design, offering enhanced efficiency and durability. H. Lawrence Culp, Jr., Chairman and CEO of GE Aerospace, expressed pride in the partnership with Delta and emphasized the GEnx engine’s reliability.

Commitments and Future Orders

This order aligns with Delta’s previously stated capital expenditure and capacity targets. Following this announcement, Delta has a total of 232 narrowbody and 54 widebody aircraft on order for future delivery. This commitment reflects Delta’s ongoing efforts to modernize its fleet and improve operations in the coming years.
