Time Out Market Closing Soon in Fulton Market
Time Out Market in Fulton Market will close its doors on January 23, marking the end of a seven-year presence in the community. This announcement was made by Time Out, the parent company of the food hall, which is known for its coverage of restaurants and entertainment globally, including in Chicago.
Overview of Time Out Market
Time Out Market opened in 2019 with the mission of showcasing Chicago’s culinary talents under one roof. It has been a place where customers could enjoy a variety of options from multiple vendors in a vibrant open-seating environment. The market has also been a venue for events, featuring DJs and family storytime sessions.
Current Status of Time Out Market
- Operated for seven years in Fulton Market.
- Hosted 17 vendors at the time of closure.
Reasons for Closure
Michael Marley, CEO of Time Out Market, attributed the closure to a drop in foot traffic and increased operational costs, exacerbated by the shift to hybrid work arrangements following the pandemic. In a statement, Marley expressed gratitude towards the team, vendors, and customers, highlighting Chicago’s vibrant food and cultural scene.
Impact on Vendors
One of the impacted vendors, Jesse Li, owner of Qing Xiang Yuan Dumplings, expressed surprise at the decision. He had been operating in the market since summer 2024 and noted a decline in business due to fewer workers in the area as remote work became prevalent. Li must now vacate the premises by next week.
Future of Time Out Markets
The closure in Fulton Market is part of a larger reduction, as Time Out also announced the shuttering of its Boston market. With only locations remaining in New York City and Brooklyn, the company plans to expand its presence internationally. Current Time Out Markets operate in cities such as Montreal, Dubai, Cape Town, and more, with additional markets under development in Vancouver, Abu Dhabi, Prague, and Riyadh set for 2026.
Despite the closures, Time Out Chicago will continue to operate, maintaining its commitment to championing local culinary talents and offerings.
