Frigidaire Minifridges Recall Expands to 1 Million Units Sold Nationwide

Frigidaire-branded minifridges are facing a significant recall due to fire hazards, affecting nearly one million units nationwide. This expanded recall originates from Curtis International, the company responsible for manufacturing and distributing these appliances. In a notice released by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recall includes an additional 330,000 minifridges, following a prior recall of 634,000 units in July 2024.

Details of the Recall

The recalled product is the Curtis International 6-can minifridge, model EFMIS121. This specific model, identified by its red color and the “Frigidaire” branding on the front, was sold exclusively at Target stores and on Target.com from January 2020 until October 2023.

Fire Hazard Risks

The CPSC has raised concerns about the internal electrical components of these minifridges. These components can potentially short-circuit, igniting surrounding plastic and creating fire and burn hazards. Since the initial recall, at least six incidents of this model catching fire have been reported.

Previous Recall Information

The first recall notice addressed separate Frigidaire minifridge models and detailed 26 incidents where these units exhibited issues such as smoking, sparking, and overheating. These incidents led to property damages exceeding $700,000. The earlier units were sold at Walmart and Amazon.com.

Consumer Instructions

  • Immediately cease use of the EFMIS121 minifridge.
  • Unplug the appliance and cut the power cord.
  • Mark the front of the minifridge with “Recall” using permanent marker.
  • Follow local and state regulations when disposing of the appliance.
