Buyer Unveiled for $79.5M Wyoming Ranch Larger Than Rhode Island

A Wyoming ranch larger than Rhode Island has found a new owner, putting an end to speculation about the mysterious buyer. On January 14, Christopher Robinson, a member of the Summit County Council, finalized the purchase of the 916,000-acre Pathfinder Ranches through his family-owned business, The Ensign Group L.C.

Details of the Pathfinder Ranches Purchase

Originally listed for $79.5 million, the final purchase price of the sprawling property remains undisclosed. Pathfinder Ranches spans across four counties in Wyoming and comprises approximately 1 percent of the state’s total land area.

  • Size: 916,000 acres
  • Comparable Size: Nearly 1,431 square miles, similar to Delaware
  • Land Ownership: Eclipses TV’s Dutton Ranch from Yellowstone (between 775,000 and 825,000 acres)

Historical Significance and Features

The ranch is notable for its historical landmarks and natural features. It includes over 20 miles of the Sweetwater River and stretches across parts of the Pedro, Ferris, Seminoe, and Green Mountain ranges. Independence Rock, a landmark along significant pioneer trails, is located within its boundaries.

Robinson currently manages nearly one million acres of land and acquired Pathfinder just four years after purchasing the adjacent 86,000-acre Stone Ranch. He emphasized the significance of reuniting the land, as the family from which he purchased the Stone Ranch previously owned much of Pathfinder until selling it in 1975.

Future Plans for Pathfinder Ranches

The integration of the Stone Ranch with Pathfinder is intended to create a self-sustaining livestock operation. Robinson stated, “We’re not generally landlords. We’re going to grow into it, predominantly running our own livestock on it.”

In alignment with his business goals, Robinson also expressed a commitment to long-term conservation, stating, “We love land and water. We think it’s a good long-term investment.”

Robinson’s Background

Christopher Robinson has been a member of the Summit County Council since his election in 2008. In December, he announced his decision not to seek reelection. His focus now appears to be on land stewardship and sustainable management of his new property, Pathfinder Ranches.

As the new owner of one of the most extensive ranches in the United States, Robinson’s approach emphasizes both agricultural sustainability and a deep appreciation for the natural landscape. The acquisition reinforces his status as a significant player in the realm of large-scale land management.
