Transforming Lake Washington Commutes

The Crosslake Connection marks a major milestone for Sound Transit by integrating the 1 and 2 Lines. The new segment will enable seamless travel between the Eastside and Seattle, enhancing overall mobility.

Innovatively, engineers designed the system to operate on a floating bridge— a world-first in light rail transit. This unique approach was essential for connecting both sides of Lake Washington effectively.

Service Details

Train operations are scheduled from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 6 a.m. to midnight on Sundays. During peak hours, service will operate every eight minutes, while off-peak service will occur every 10 to 15 minutes. Notably, the busiest section between Lynnwood and the International District/Chinatown will feature combined service at approximately four-minute intervals.

Future Considerations

Despite the celebration over the upcoming opening, the project has seen significant setbacks. It is over five years behind the initial timeline and has incurred tens of millions in additional costs. This raises crucial questions about funding for future expansions of Sound Transit.

Sound Transit CEO Dow Constantine highlighted the significance of the opening, stating, “This extension connects east and west, connecting the 1 and 2 Lines—a transformational achievement for our region.” As the March 28 date draws near, more details on inauguration festivities and service specifics will be announced.
