Thousands Lose Power in Denver Amid Sunday Outages

On Sunday, a significant power outage affected over 185,000 customers in the Denver area, leading to widespread disruptions. The outage primarily impacted customers of Core Electric Cooperative and Xcel Energy.

Extent of Power Outages in Denver

During the peak of the outages, approximately 44,000 Core Electric Cooperative customers and 145,000 Xcel Energy clients were without electricity. The outages were particularly severe in the southeast metro area, affecting multiple counties.

  • Arapahoe County: 23,416 customers
  • Douglas County: 20,242 customers
  • Elbert County: 692 customers
  • Adams County: 1 customer

As of 5:15 p.m. Sunday, the majority of outages reported by Core Electric had been resolved. However, around 40,000 Xcel Energy customers remained without power at 4:45 p.m. the same day.

Causes and Impact

The cause of the outages was still under investigation. Experts from Core Electric indicated that the issue might have originated at one of Xcel Energy’s substations. Crews were actively working to repair the damaged systems.

The outages also triggered disruptions at Denver International Airport, where train services connecting different concourses experienced interruptions. By Sunday evening, normal operations had resumed at the airport.

Local law enforcement, including the Parker and Aurora Police Departments, reported challenges due to the outages. Issues included nonfunctioning emergency phone lines and dark traffic signals, which further complicated the situation.

This incident is ongoing, and more updates will follow as the investigation continues into the outages affecting thousands in the Denver area.
