Motion Picture Association Condemns Widespread AI Copyright Infringement

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has expressed strong concerns regarding the newly launched AI video generator, Seedance 2.0. This service, developed by ByteDance, has reportedly led to significant copyright infringement since its release. According to MPA representatives, within just one day, Seedance 2.0 was involved in extensive unauthorized use of copyrighted U.S. material.

Concerns Over AI Copyright Infringement

Seedance 2.0 is an upgrade that ByteDance claims offers a “substantial leap in generation quality” compared to its predecessor. Videos produced by this AI tool have gone viral, including a dramatic scene featuring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. The MPA argues that this kind of content creation violates established copyright protections.

MPA’s Statement

  • “By launching a service without adequate safeguards, ByteDance is ignoring copyright laws.”
  • The spokesperson emphasizes that copyright laws are essential for protecting creators’ rights.
  • The MPA has urged ByteDance to halt its infringing activities immediately.

Past Issues with AI Tools

This incident recalls a similar situation with OpenAI’s Sora 2, which faced backlash last fall for potential copyright violations. In response to those concerns, OpenAI implemented measures to make it harder for users to breach copyrights. Disney subsequently reached a licensing agreement with OpenAI, allowing the use of 200 characters within Sora 2.

However, it remains uncertain if ByteDance will consider similar arrangements with copyright holders. The lack of clear feedback from the company raises questions about how they will address these copyright challenges.

Industry Reactions

The release of Seedance 2.0 has elicited mixed reactions from industry professionals. For instance, Rhett Reese, a writer known for the “Deadpool” films, expressed dismay over the future implications of AI-generated content. He commented that one day, individuals might seamlessly produce films that rival current Hollywood releases.

Ruairi Robinson, the filmmaker behind the viral Cruise-Pitt video, highlighted the simplicity of the video creation process: “This was a 2 line prompt in Seedance 2.” He sparked further discussion with a thought-provoking query on social media regarding the ethics of creating content with minimal effort.

Popular Seedance Creations

Other popular videos created with Seedance 2.0 include parodies or reinterpretations of iconic films and series such as:

  • Spider-Man
  • Titanic
  • Stranger Things
  • The Lord of the Rings
  • Shrek

The rapid proliferation of AI-generated content continues to reshuffle the landscape for creators, raising significant questions about copyright and artistic integrity.
