Barroco Grill, Hola Tacos Locations Closed Abruptly by Owners
Barroco Grill and Hola Tacos have abruptly closed some locations, signaling a significant shift for the well-known family-run business. Founded in 2011 by Carlos and Juan Vergara, Barroco Grill began as a small 12-seat café in Lakewood. Over the years, it expanded rapidly, earning acclaim for its Colombian street food, including the popular arepa sandwiches.
History of Barroco Grill
Starting originally with a modest space, Barroco Grill quickly grew to accommodate over 80 guests. In 2017, the Vergara family opened a second Barroco location on Larchmere, followed by a third in Crocker Park the following year. Their success extended to creating additional ventures, including multiple Hola Tacos locations, Amazonia, and La Pecora.
Recent Closures
- Barroco Grill locations in Lakewood and Westlake closed this week.
- Hola Tacos in Lakewood is on hiatus until spring.
Juan Vergara pointed out that these closures are not due to a lack of customers. Instead, family health matters prompted the decision to step back from daily operations. “We have to start there,” he stated regarding the Lakewood Barroco, which had become their busiest location.
Continued Operations
Despite the recent closures, the Larchmere location of Barroco Grill (12718 Larchmere Blvd.) will remain operational. This decision is attributed to a favorable arrangement that includes La Pecora Pizzabar, located next door. Additionally, Amazonia, the cocktail and wood-fired pizza venue in Lakewood, will continue to serve customers.
Juan Vergara expressed pride in the journey they have undertaken over the past 15 years. While transitioning out of certain operations is bittersweet, he emphasized the dignity in stepping away after contributing significantly to the local food scene. Upcoming months may see these locations re-entering the market under new management, ensuring that their legacy continues.
In summary, the Vergara family is taking a step back to focus on health and family, while maintaining select locations that continue to thrive in the community.
