E-ZPass Transitions from Transponders to Stickers
Massachusetts is making a significant change to its E-ZPass system. Starting Sunday, drivers can expect a new method for electronic toll collection as the state transitions from traditional hard-plastic transponders to innovative windshield sticker tags.
E-ZPass Transition Details
The new sticker tags will replace the older transponders and will be provided to E-ZPass customers at no cost. These stickers utilize advanced radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology to facilitate seamless toll transactions.
Efficiency and Cost Savings
According to Jonathan Gulliver, the Highway Administrator, the stickers have a small chip embedded. This chip activates when it passes under toll readers, ensuring accurate identification and processing.
“It works on an RFID system, so it’s energized as it moves beneath tolling gantries,” Gulliver explained. As a result, drivers can continue on their way without delays.
Driver Experience
- Existing E-ZPass transponder users are not required to replace their devices immediately.
- The newly introduced stickers will also be available free of charge for any replacement needs.
- Previously, a lost or damaged transponder incurred a $20 replacement fee.
Projected Financial Impact
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) projects considerable savings from this transition. The cost to produce each sticker tag is approximately 55 cents, whereas traditional transponders cost around $6.70 each.
