Knight Donation Leads 2025’s Top Philanthropic Gifts – Chronicle of Philanthropy

The Chronicle of Philanthropy has revealed its annual report on the largest charitable donations for 2025, totaling $5 billion. The leading contributor this year is Phil Knight, co-founder of Nike, alongside his wife, Penny, who donated $2 billion.

Major Contributions in 2025

  • Phil Knight and Penny Knight: $2 billion to Oregon Health & Science University.
  • Warren Buffett: $746.7 million donation in Berkshire Hathaway stock.
  • Jeff Bezos’ Parents: $500 million pledge to UNICEF USA.
  • University Athletics Programs: $600 million from two separate donations.
  • Hospital Construction in South Dakota: $300 million donation.
  • Art Museum Expansion: Approximately $200 million donation.

Support for Cancer Research

The Knights’ substantial $2 billion gift is intended to enhance cancer care and research at the Knight Cancer Institute. This contribution will fund clinical trials and improve support services for cancer patients and their families. Key services include psychological counseling, genetic testing, nutritional care, and survivorship support.

The Knights’ relationship with Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) dates back nearly two decades. They have contributed a total of at least $2.7 billion to OHSU over the years, with their first major gift occurring in 2008.

Buffett’s Legacy Continues

Warren Buffett’s notable $746.7 million donation was made in November through 1.5 million shares of Berkshire Hathaway stock to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation. This foundation focuses primarily on women’s reproductive health and offers college scholarships for students in Nebraska.

UNICEF USA and Global Child Nutrition

Another significant pledge came from Jackie and Mike Bezos, parents of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. They pledged $500 million to UNICEF USA to support the Child Nutrition Fund, aiming to enhance access to nutritious food for underprivileged children and women globally.

Other Significant Donations and Pledges

  • Two donations of $600 million targeted university athletics programs.
  • A generous $300 million supported the construction of a new hospital in South Dakota.
  • An additional $200 million was allocated for an art museum expansion project.

Notably, a $6.25 billion pledge from Michael and Susan Dell did not make the list. Their initiative aims to invest in accounts for 25 million children under 10 in lower-income areas. However, this gift is still in the planning stages and has not yet been designated to a qualifying nonprofit organization.

The Chronicle’s lists reflect only publicly announced major gifts. The full ranking of the biggest donors will be published in March as part of the Philanthropy 50 report, detailing overall contributions for the year.
