Day Laborers Protest Bone-Piercing Noise Machines at Home Depot

Day laborers in Cypress Park are facing an ongoing challenge due to newly installed noise machines at Home Depot. The devices emit high-pitched sounds that many workers describe as “bone-piercing.” This situation has prompted significant pushback from the labor community.

Noise Machines Installed at Home Depot

In late November, three machines were placed in the Home Depot parking lot, causing distress among day laborers waiting for work. Jose, a worker who regularly stands outside the store, stated the noise is unbearable and can lead to headaches and nausea.

Protests and Concerns

  • Instituto de Educacion Popular del Sur de California (IDEPSCA) organized a protest against the machines.
  • Protesters demand the removal of the machines and express opposition to ICE raids occurring nearby.
  • Approximately fifty people have been detained at the Cypress Park location this year alone.

During a recent press conference, IDEPSCA’s executive director, Maegan Ortiz, highlighted that the noise aims to displace day laborers. She noted that the high-frequency sound affects workers’ mental health and well-being.

Company Response

Home Depot asserted that safety measures, including the noise machines, are vital for maintaining store security. George Lane, a spokesperson, emphasized that the company does not coordinate with ICE regarding enforcement actions.

Community Impact

The machines are situated under the 5 Freeway, but part of the parking lot is actually California Department of Transportation property, raising concerns about their installation. Councilwoman Eunisses Hernandez criticized the decision, labeling it as a deliberate act against immigrant communities.

For many workers, the day laborer center represents more than just a workplace. It serves as a community hub where they gather and support one another. However, the introduction of noise machines and barriers has disrupted their sense of safety and belonging.

Jose described the center as a second home where they care for the environment, but he expressed frustration over how the noise and barriers have negatively affected them. The added stress from the ongoing changes compounds the hardships already faced by the day laborers due to economic uncertainties and fears surrounding ICE raids.

The deployment of these devices has ignited a larger conversation about corporate responsibility and its impact on vulnerable populations. As the protests continue, day laborers remain determined to advocate for their rights and community well-being.
