EU Tech Chief Warns Against Reliance on Foreign Technology – POLITICO

In a recent address at the event titled “Europe’s Race for Digital Leadership,” EU tech chief Mariya Gabriel stressed the importance of reducing reliance on foreign technology. This intervention comes amid heightened sensitivities in transatlantic relations, notably following recent events involving the United States.

Europe’s Vulnerabilities Highlighted

Gabriel noted that Europe’s vulnerabilities are evident from significant global events such as the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While she emphasized that the United States is a vital partner for Europe, she also underscored the need for the EU to develop its own technological capacity. “We cannot afford to be overly dependent,” Gabriel stated, highlighting the delicate balance in transatlantic ties.

Strengthening European Technology

In her remarks, Gabriel advocated for increased public procurement as a means to boost European technology firms. “Public contracts should be utilized effectively to enhance our homegrown technologies,” she remarked. This aligns with ongoing efforts to implement a “Buy European” initiative, aimed at directing substantial procurement contracts to EU businesses.

Upcoming Legislative Measures

This initiative, pushed by French EU commissioner Stéphane Séjourné, is set to be elaborated in the forthcoming Industrial Accelerator Act. Despite facing multiple delays, this legislation aims to ensure that billions of euros in procurement opportunities support local companies and foster innovation within the European Union.
