Italian Pasta Prices May Soar or Vanish Due to Proposed Tariffs
Your favorite Italian pasta may experience significant price increases in the upcoming year. A recent proposal from the U.S. Commerce Department could raise tariffs on 13 imported pasta brands by as much as 107%. If implemented, these tariffs would likely lead to a steep rise in retail prices.
Proposed Tariffs Impact on Pasta Prices
The proposed tariffs could result in consumer prices more than doubling as early as January. The brands affected by this proposal include well-known names such as:
- Barilla
- Garofalo
- La Molisana
- Rummo
Should the tariffs take effect, some companies may opt to cease their exports to the United States altogether.
Reason Behind the Proposal
The U.S. Commerce Department argues that these pasta manufacturers have been selling their products below market value in the U.S. As part of the proposal, a 92% “antidumping duty” on imported pasta has been suggested. This duty would be added to the existing 15% tariff on imports from the European Union, culminating in a total tariff of 107%.
Background of the Investigation
This scrutiny of pasta prices began under the Biden administration. The significant proposed increase in tariffs aims to ensure fair pricing for U.S. consumers and support domestic pasta producers.
